The Struggle of Embracing Identity International Day Against Homophobia Transphobia and Biphobia

Image
I have never had an interest in fading into the background and becoming invisible. Let's start with this powerful quote: I am who I am because I have chosen to be this way; this is my most authentic self. For a large part of my life, I felt as though I was committing a grave sin Meet Raziya , born male but deeply yearned to express herself through wearing a saree, bindi, and makeup. These desires made Raziya question her identity, as societal pressures and the judgment of those around her reinforced the notion that something was fundamentally wrong. Today, at 35 years old, Raziya reflects on her childhood, marred by depression and thoughts of suicide, all because she felt her true self was a punishable offense—the most natural version of herself was deemed criminal. However, Raziya's story is not an isolated incident but rather representative of the experiences of many transgender individuals who navigate a world that fails to accommodate their existence. Sacrificing one&#8...

End AIDS India is a national campaign and a public movement to end HIV and AIDS in India. It is led by Alliance India (India HIV/AIDS Alliance), a trusted non-profit organisation with the commitment and faith of more than 50,000 individuals and institutions who have financially supported the campaign and continue to believe in the campaign goal to create zero impact: zero new case, zero death due to HIV and zero incidence of discrimination.  Change begins with one action, YOU are the change Globally, nations and leaders have a mandate to end HIV as an epidemic by 2030 and put an end to HIV transmission and deaths while improving the quality of life for those living with HIV. India is on track with the milestones set against global HIV targets by UNAIDS. However, with the emergence of a new public health crisis brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic poses threat to the progress achieved by the communities vulnerable to HIV. We must combine healthcare services on HIV and COVID-19 to ...

COVID 19 – The Sweet and Bitter Truths

Image
With the onslaught of Covid 19 and the subsequent nationwide lockdown, normal life went for a complete toss in the first half of 2020. The emergency protocol along with the ravaging virus brought about immense discontent and dismay in various spheres. Innumerable people lost their jobs, many survived on reduced salaries, businesses nosedived, health issues other than Covid 19 remained unattended, mental health issues spiked up, and many lost their lives to Covid 19 . India being home to the world’s 2nd largest population living with HIV, faced a major jolt as the Covid 19 pandemic threw up grave challenges and threatened the achievements of HIV and TB responses in the country. The already immunocompromised community’s plight turned worse with people having to combat HIV and the easy probability of getting infected by the deadly Covid 19. Stigma and discrimination centering around the lives of HIV survivors looms large; and regular medication being indispensable, the national lock...

3 Reasons Why We Must Prioritise Human Dignity And Health Rights Of People Who Inject Or Use Drugs

The moral and legal lens to drug abuse fuels social stigma and discrimination India has estimated 850,000 people who inject drugs of which an alarming number of 460,000 are children. Apart from this reality, there are also an additional 1.8 million adults who need help for inhalant dependence and around 7.7 million Indians require help for opioid dependence (All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). The moral and legal parameter to judge a person dependent on drugs is a double-edged sword that exhibits judgment and punishment more than it does empathy and compassion. And the punishment perhaps is not the best approach to correction. The moral outlook makes the people dependent on drugs seem morally weak and inferior beings leading to curtailing of their human and health rights. In turn, they become disempowered sometimes even losing their lives. Reintegrating them back in society also becomes a challenging process. Most at risk of contracting HIV, hepatitis C (HCV), and ot...

Covid-19 Weakened My Body, But My Resolve To Live Remained Undaunted

I am Subramaniam and I am a fundraiser. Let me share with you about my experience of testing positive for COVID-19 . I live in Chennai with my wife and a ten-year-old daughter. I fundraise for End AIDS India campaign which means I solicit funds from individuals and small businesses to contribute towards HIV free and healthier India. In my long association with End AIDS India campaign, I have understood how critical it is to sustain HIV programmes to reach India’s goal of making the country HIV free. This is precisely why I sprung to action as soon as the lockdown was lifted from my area. People living with HIV generally suffer low immunity and are susceptible to other infections. I knew we cannot halt fundraising and supporting more than 1.4 million children and adults living with HIV registered with our programme and provide them with life-saving medicines, food, essential supplies. Aware of the highly contagious nature of the novel coronavirus I took all possible precautions whe...

Why ZERO Discrimination is Crucial To Ending AIDS in India?

“Within a year into my marriage, my husband fell ill and quickly became bedridden. He was diagnosed with HIV and AIDS . My health was normal at that time but in the routine spouse test, I too tested HIV positive. I didn’t know much about HIV except that it is a deadly disease. I was young and terrified. Instead of supporting me, my husband and his family began abusing me. They blamed me for infecting my husband. They started questioning my character. Eventually, they literally kicked me out of the house and I had no choice but to return to my parents”, says Dimple who was rejected by her in-laws for no fault of hers. Another young mother says, “I was neglected and denied of proper care by healthcare workers during the birth of my second child because of my HIV status. It is the deepest pain that I live with that I couldn’t protect my child from getting infected with HIV.” Discrimination of any form and in any place is a violation of human rights and a barrier to achieving a ...
